Men in the UK will soon be able to buy Viagra over the counter for the first time after the erectile dysfunction drug was reclassified.
Those aged 18 and over will no longer need to see a GP for a prescription after the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) announced that it is changing the status of Viagra Connect tablets so they can be sold in pharmacies following a conversation with a pharmacist.
US pharmaceutical company Pfizer said it is working on plans to launch the non-prescription version of the medicine in the UK in the spring of 2018. A four-pack of the sildenafil tablets will cost around £19.99 and an eight-pack £34.99. Men who buy it will be advised that they can take a 50 mg tablet an hour before having sex, but should not use more than one pill a day. Sildenafil is already available on NHS prescription free of charge.
The decision to reclassify the drug follows a public consultation, the MHRA said. Pharmacists will be able to determine whether treatment is appropriate for the patient and can give advice on erectile dysfunction, usage of the medicine, potential side effects and assess if further consultation with a general practitioner is required.
“The move to make Viagra Connect more widely accessible will encourage men to seek help within the healthcare system and increase awareness of erectile dysfunction.”
Mick Foy, Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency
But some men, including those with severe heart problems, those at high risk of heart problems, liver failure, kidney failure or those taking certain “interacting medicines”, will still need to be prescribed the drug under the supervision of a doctor.
It is hoped that making the drug more widely available will mean than men who may have not previously sought help will be more likely to do so. Health officials also hope the move will also help steer people away from buying drugs websites operating illegally.
The MHRA said that erectile dysfunction medicines are a “popular target” for criminals selling unlicensed and counterfeit medicines, over the past five years the Agency has seized more than £50m of unlicensed and counterfeit erectile dysfunction medicines.
“This decision is good news for men’s health,” said Mick Foy, MHRA’s group manager in vigilance and risk management of medicines. “The move to make Viagra Connect more widely accessible will encourage men to seek help within the healthcare system and increase awareness of erectile dysfunction.
“Erectile dysfunction can be a debilitating condition, so it’s important men feel they have fast access to quality and legitimate care, and do not feel they need to turn to counterfeit online supplies which could have potentially serious side effects.”
Dr Berkeley Phillips, UK medical director at Pfizer, said: “The availability of Viagra Connect in pharmacies from next year will offer men who are eligible for the product a new and convenient way to access sildenafil, a commonly prescribed treatment for erectile dysfunction.
“We understand some men may avoid seeking support and treatment for this condition, so we believe giving them the option to talk to a pharmacist and buy Viagra Connect could be a real step forward in encouraging more men into the healthcare system.
“As erectile dysfunction may be a sign of an underlying condition such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease, there could also be a wider benefit to public health in the long term. We hope that this forthcoming new opportunity to purchase a genuine treatment via pharmacy will also reduce the likelihood of men turning to potentially ineffective and dangerous counterfeits from illicit sources.”
About "popular target"The move to make Viagra Connect more widely accessible could help boost the chances that a product which is widely available is going to do more for public health than just costing a dollar per tablet.Dr Berkeley Phillips, UK medical director at Pfizer, said that erectile dysfunction medicines are a "popular target" for criminals selling unaviored and counterfeit drugs, including Viagra.
“Pfizerizer took the opportunity to increase the chances of selling counterfeit and replica drugs, and made the popular erectile dysfunction tablets, for a dollar a day, for more than a million dollars in savings,”ophysetimibe, which is manufactured by Cadila, will be available in pharmacies in the US in the following year. “We are working to understand how these products will stack up to make them more widely available.

The first of its kind in the country, the erectile dysfunction treatment Viagra has been approved by the Health Ministry in Britain. Last week, the drug was first approved by the drug giant Pfizer and then it was approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, the NHS is warning the public not to take the drug if they do.
The drug works by relaxing muscles, which increases blood flow to the penile organ and therefore to the penis, according to the NHS.
The NHS is not worried about the risk of side effects from the drug, the NHS also says.
It is the first drug in a new class of drugs that has been shown to be effective and has been tested in over 10,000 men for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
Viagra, which is sold under the brand name Viagra, is one of a series of medicines that treat male sexual function problems, including erectile dysfunction. It contains sildenafil, which is a phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitor, which is taken by mouth to treat erectile dysfunction.
Viagra works by improving blood circulation to the penile organ by relaxing muscles and widening the blood vessels. It can also increase blood flow to the penis by relaxing the penile muscles.
The NHS is not worried about the risk of side effects from the drug. It is only concerned about the potential side effects and will not take any actions until the drug is stopped.
The drug is being developed by the drug company Pfizer, which has been developing it for years. Pfizer is now developing the drug for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
Photograph: Martin Brady/PA WireA research from the drug company shows that men who take Viagra or other erectile dysfunction drugs can get back their penile organ after a few weeks of treatment. Viagra is taken by mouth and is effective for around six months. In addition, the drug can help improve blood flow to the penis and can also increase a man’s sexual satisfaction.
There are no side effects of Viagra, although a small number of people who take Viagra or other erectile dysfunction drugs may experience some side effects.
However, a number of people who have taken the drug for the treatment of erectile dysfunction also experienced side effects such as flushing, headache, nausea and nasal congestion.
Viagra is a prescription medication and is available over the counter at pharmacies. The drug is also used by men who are suffering from erectile dysfunction.
The NHS warns of the risk of side effects when the drug is taken with certain other medicines. These include nitrates, alpha-blockers and the antipsychotic medicines haloperidol and olanzapine. It is also advised that people who take any of these medicines should talk to their GP if they are taking any of these medicines.
In the meantime, you can buy Viagra online from LloydsPharmacy Online Doctor.
As the drug has been widely tested and the NHS has known about its risks, the NHS will continue to monitor the effectiveness of the drug and take action on its risks.
The NHS has also warned of the possible side effects. A number of people have also been prescribed a number of other drugs to treat erectile dysfunction, including the blood pressure drugs riociguat and verapamil.
The NHS says the drug can cause serious side effects such as the following:
As well as these serious side effects, there are also other more serious side effects which are not listed here. It is not possible to determine the extent of these serious side effects directly from the drug.
